Wagely

Client

A US-based high-end electric bikes manufacturer.

The client doesn’t have a strong developed visual identity, but have a clearly defined mission. The company seeks people to engage more with their environment and local communities, as well as to promote an eco-conscious outlook.

Problem

Design an e-bike companion app.

The app should be an extension of onboard bike computer:

  • display speed, charge, trip distance, and power output
  • provide access to bike functions and settings
  • also calculate caloric burn and CO2 emissions offset
  • give ability to set personal goals
  • allow tracking and saving trips
  • have some social and navigation functions to engage owners to use bike more
  • it should emphasise the hi-tech nature of the product, but also be friendly and familiar
  • it should provide value to owners of Magnum Bikes, other ebikes and classic and sport bicycles.

Solution

The notions of competition and self-improvement are staples of all fitness-related apps.

The home screen is a good place to remind user about his personal progress and ongoing events.

I tried to construct a UI that says “Sport”, and “City”, and “Tech”. But doesn’t shout in anyone’s face and retains mass appeal.

“Friends beacon” feature allows users to find some company spontaneously.

It fosters sense of community and encourages offline communication.

Its an easy way to provide value to all app users and promote network effects.

In the navigation module users can plan their trip with access to community curated routes and interesting locations, landmarks, and hidden gems.

This encourages users to explore their local environments and ride more.

It also promotes the perception of the app as a one-stop-shop for all things bike.

AOD Tracking mode is optimised for high visibility and readability, and low battery consumption.

It takes full advantage of having access to onboard bike computer and GPS data.

Key bike features are easily accessible.

Taking advantage of having access to GPS data, the app cab provide navigation tips.

To force users to switch to some maps app would defeat the purpose of having AOD mode.

Community module provides a variety of features:

  • users can share their trips and stats
  • challenge their friends
  • share routes and locations
  • organize and participate in bike tours, races, and sponsored events
  • share photos and comment.

This app doesn’t take seek to challenge established social media platforms. But to serve small groups of friends and colleagues, and foster local communities of like-minded individuals.
